Switchback Gear Exchange is a unique local store located in the heart of Cheshire Village at 2166 Plainfield Ave NE. Owners Mike and Rachel are outdoor enthusiasts who know that a lot of outdoor recreational gear can be quite expensive. Also a lot of people gear up often, which leaves their used equipment collecting dust. Switchback Gear Exchange was born out of the idea of helping people get into new types of outdoor recreation by allowing them to gear up with less expensive pre-owned equipment, while offering an outlet for people to sell their used equipment easily. Switchback Gear Exchange first opened in Marquette in 2010, but Mike and Rachel and their store have since relocated to Grand Rapids, and quickly expanded the business to include bike maintenance services.
Switchback carries a wide range of both new and pre-owned outdoor equipment, including bikes (both children and adult!) and accessories, camping gear, electronic devices, fishing equipment, footwear, kayaks and other paddling equipment, as well as clothing. Switchback will buy back used equipment too, but it is strongly recommended to call ahead before bringing items in for purchase.
Switchback offers a Bike Tribe membership. For $60 a year, bicyclists can enjoy free and unlimited basic bike tune-ups on the registered bike, 25% off all bike accessories and components installed by them, 25% off any additional bike services beyond basic tune-ups, and access to Tribe-only special events and programs. They offer discounted memberships for additional bikes in the same family.
Stop by the store and say hi to Mike and Rachel, visit their website, or contact them at 616.259.9609. They will make it easy for you to get out and explore the outdoors by helping you get geared up with great outdoor equipment at an affordable price.
