Well House is a non-profit in Grand Rapids that purchases vacant homes, fixes them up, and provides safe, affordable housing to the homeless. The housing is permanent, shared, and low-cost. Each tenant must sign a lease and abide by the house rules, but entering treatment or sobriety is not a precondition for housing. Well House includes people at whatever point they are at in their lives, and they believe providing immediate access to housing and focusing on each individual's strengths and abilities to improve their circumstances is extremely important. Their approach is to provide client-centered strategies that cater to each individual's unique needs and challenges because it has shown to have higher success rates for recovery and community integration than a "one size fits all" approach.
Since 2013, they have purchased 13 vacant homes, brought them up to code, and moved in 87 people who once lived on the streets or in emergency shelters. Well House also has an urban farm that provides residents with the opportunity to earn an income and learn skills necessary for entering the work force, while promoting healthy eating habits.
